Acid rain is different from what you think of when you hear "rain". Acid rain is rain that has been made acidic by pollutants in the air. Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain.

Acid rain is more of a problem today then it was in the past. It is more of a problem today because more pollution is being created every day. The pollution comes from many things such as cars, factories, volcanos, wildfires, industrial plants, and power plants. Most of these pollution sources were not around years ago, so not as much acid rain was produced.
