Acid rain looks, feels, and tastes just like clean rain. The harm to people from acid rain is not direct. Walking in acid rain, or even swimming in an acidic lake, is no more dangerous than walking or swimming in clean water. However, the pollutants that cause acid rain damage human health. Acid rain can cause respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, or pneumonia which make it hard to breathe.

Acid rain can also harm plants and animals. Many plants are harmed from acid rain because the rain seeps down into the plant's roots and dissolves the nutrients the plant needs in order to live. Acid rain also affects aquatic animals. Aquatic animals can be harmed by the water they swim in. If the lake, ocean, river, or stream is polluted with acid rain, the animals can become extremely harmed or even die.
